Trailblazing racer, Highland Springs grad Spurlock returns home to race in Henrico!

Highland Springs High School graduate Dystany Spurlock made history this spring by becoming the first Black woman to compete in one of NASCAR’s top three circuits, and she’s bringing her trailblazing Truck Series driving back to Henrico this weekend when she competes in her hometown at Richmond Raceway!

As part of her homecoming, Spurlock visited Highland Springs on Thursday to speak with media members, students, staff members and her family about her racing career. The 2009 graduate remarked about her time at the old Highland Springs High School (now converted into the Oak Avenue Complex), where she competed in cheerleading, track and field and even football — the lone young woman on the team — and began chasing her motorsports dream.

“I left here with a dream, and I’m standing here today because this place — this school, these people — never let me forget where I came from, even while I was chasing where I was going,” she said.

Digital safety on school-issued devices

Securly Home is a family engagement app that extends digital safety beyond the school day by giving families greater visibility into and control over their child’s online activity on their school-issued device.

Parents’ email addresses are enrolled in Securly Home as part of your child’s school registration. Once enrolled in Securly Home, parents gain access to the Securly Home app and will begin receiving weekly email reports containing a snapshot of your child’s online safety and activity.

Beginning Monday, August 17, new families and parents who are not currently receiving Securly Home weekly email reports will receive a welcome email at the email address listed in PowerSchool. The email will include information about accessing the Securly Home app and weekly reports with a snapshot of your child’s online activity.

Parents already receiving weekly email reports will not receive another welcome email, and your access will remain the same.

We encourage families to download the app to stay connected to their child’s online activity, support meaningful conversations about healthy technology habits, and use available features to manage access to the school-issued device at home.

Other back-to-school reminders

  • Transportation note: Finalized bus schedules for the first day of school will be posted by Monday, Aug. 17. For more information about bus routes, visit henricoschools.us/pupil-transportation.
